Today 14 years ago, on July 25, 2009, the last soldier veteran of the First World War passed away - Harry Patch - The "Last Fighting Tommy".
Henry John "Harry" Patch was born on June 17, 1898 near Somerset, England. In 1913 he left school and became an apprentice plumber.
In October 1916, aged 18, Patch was conscripted into the British Army. He served in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in a Lewis Gun section. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in the winter of 1916/1917.
Patch arrived in France in June 1917 and soon saw action in the Battle of Passchendaele. On September 22, 1917, he was injured in the groin when a shell exploded near him and some comrades, killing 3 of them.
Patch later established September 22 as his personal Remembrance Day. He also said he didn't remember the 3 killed comrades' faces, only their names. He was sent back to England in December 1917 to recover from his wounds and was still there when the war ended on November 11, 1918.
After the war, Patch returned to work as a plumber. During the Second World War Patch was a fireman in Britain. After the war he ran a plumbing company and retired at the age of 65.
Patch was one of the last living First World War veterans by the early 2000s and was featured in several documentaries and shows. He was awarded 8 medals and honours for his service.
In November 2004, he met German First World War veteran Charles Kuentz in Ypres who was an artilleryman in the Battle of Passchendaele. Patch later said: "With a handshake we said more about peace than anything else ever could".
On July 18, 2009, British First World War veteran Henry Allingham died, making Patch the last soldier veteran of the First World War and giving him the nickname "The Last Fighting Tommy".
Just a week after Allingham's death, Harry Patch passed away on July 25, 2009, aged 111 years, 1 month, 1 week and 1 day old, being the last soldier veteran of World War 1. He was also the oldest man in Europe and third oldest in the world. He outlived 3 wives and 2 sons.
