It was on this day, 30th April, back in 1945 when Adolf Hitler supposedly committed suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule and shooting himself in the head. The prospect of Germany winning the war had seemed unlikely since 1943, and even more so after the Western Allied armies had landed at Normandy in June 1944 and began pushing German forces back towards Berlin.
Hitler retreated to his bunker in January 1945 with his long-time mistress Eva Braun. The bunker was Located fifty-five feet under the Reich Chancellery, contained eighteen rooms, and was fully self-sufficient with its own water and electrical supply. Knowing the end was near and his dream of a 1,000-year Reich was over he appointed Admiral Karl Donitz as head of state and Goebbels as chancellor in his last will and testament.
He also married his long-time mistress Eva Braun just two days before his suicide. It’s fair to say that conspiracy theories exist regarding Hitler’s death, with many believing that he faked his death and fled overseas to South America. Interestingly Hitler had ordered his remains to be carried up the stairs through the bunker's emergency exit, doused in petrol, and set alight in the Reich Chancellery garden outside the bunker.
Understandably this has caused speculation. Records in the Soviet archives do show that the burnt remains were recovered. So, what do you think folks? Did he manage to escape? Follow us on our quest to make Facebook more educational in 2019.
