There is a terrible legend about one of the most bloodthirsty and cruel inquisitors of Spain. His name was Pedro de Arboises De Epila.
Pedro was a very educated man who was quite skilled at the game of chess. His principal enemies were heretics. He devised a way to combine rivalry with pleasure . This was a way for him to destroy heretics, to achieve theatrical effects for entertainment, to quench his thirst for blood, and to fulfill his constant desire to play chess.
The fanatic found a solution: he decided to play bloody live chess, where the”chess pieces” were victims, heretics, sentenced to death. In this venture, he enjoyed the fact that the victims had to wait a long time for their death, while watching the deaths of other victims.
The game was played out in a large hall, with the floor being the chessboard. In this game, as usual, there were white and black figures, for which one half of the condemned were dressed in white clothes, while the other half were clothed in black.
The moves were made by two monks, as Pedro himself sat nearby in a comfortable chair and enjoyed the course of the game. When any figure was considered "eaten", the executioner would arrive to execute the victim. There were several variants of execution: from a blow by a blade to the cutting off of the head.
Victims were not allowed to dodge attacks of the executioner or run away, they, like classic chess figures, should be immovable and persistent. Corpses were not removed from the board. By the end of the party, the whole floor was covered with blood, severed heads and mangled bodies.
When the party had ended, there were still living figures on the improvised chessboard. It would seem, they were lucky. But for the remaining victims there was another penalty, purification by fire (burning.)
