This pyramid was constructed about 4,500 years ago for Pharaoh Menkaure, 4th-Dynasty ruler of Egypt, during the Old Kingdom.
About a quarter of the pyramid was encased in granite, in contrast with the other two main pyramids at Giza, which were encased entirely in white limestone.
As you can see here, some of the granite, although fitted together neatly, has been left rough, whereas some sections have been smoothed. It is believed that Menkaure died before his pyramid complex was completed, and thus, the entire granite section around the pyramid was not smoothed.
But the rough facing may have been Menkaure's intention all along, as the sections that have been smoothed are around the entrance and where the mortuary temple would have stood.
This photo shows the granite both rough and smooth.
